Hearing that your condition requires minimally invasive surgery may be overwhelming. You are sure to have many questions about how to prepare beforehand and what to do afterwards. The following is a short list that may help answer some of your questions. We expect you’ll have other questions or need additional information specific to your situation – so please ask our medical team. We are here to help you feel as comfortable and educated about your surgery as possible. Before and After Surgery - MBSP

If you need minimally invasive surgery for a brain or spine condition or for chronic pain, you can always trust the medical team at Maryland Brain, Spine + Pain.

Before your surgery

Whether you will be undergoing brain or spinal surgery, your doctor may want you to take some precautions with diet, medications, exercise, walking, or driving. Please discuss with your doctor what limitations, if any, you will need to follow.

After your surgery

After your spinal surgery, you may be asked to follow guidelines regarding standing, walking, driving, etc. If you underwent minimally invasive surgery, you may be able to resume normal activities within 24 hours to a week, depending on the type of procedure. Please discuss with your doctor what limits, if any, you will need to follow.

If you will require an extended recovery time from your surgery and will need to provide your employer with a medical leave form for your job, please let your doctor know.

Patients needing pain management

We work with you on a pain management plan that includes a focus on range-of-motion exercises, core strengthening and treatment plans you can do at home as part of a daily routine.

Patients needing physical therapy

If your doctor has suggested that you will need physical therapy, and you aren’t already seeing a therapist, MBSP will work with you to recommend a physical therapist who will best address your specific therapy needs.

You can rest assured that all of your pre and post-surgical needs will be addressed and that we will guide you through the process of what you may need to do before and after surgery. At MBSP, we help you ‘return to function’ and give you your life back.

Our patients are our priority, and we are here to help you in any way.
